Walther produced approximately 400 cutaway models (Schnittmodel in German). These cutaway models were used for educational purposes to illustrate the shooting mechanism of the P5. Three variations of these cutaways exist:
The 1st variation were early production and these pistols were not marked with a serial number.
The 2nd variation were marked with serial numbers with a prefix letter "S" (abbreviation for Schnittmodel)
The 3rd variation were marked with serial numbers with prefix letters "AS" (Ausschub-Schnittmodel)
Late production cutaways (3rd variation, and possibly also the 2nd variation) were fitted with transparant grips.
Below you can see an example of an early 1st variation cutaway P5.
